Third, health promotion research is not now aimed at clarifying normative values, which might prove helpful in assisting people to exercise better judgment. The origins of contemporary health problems, I believe, do indeed lie in disturbances in people's values and judgments about their immediate felt desires.

One major purpose of this book is to show how the commitment to this particular method has displaced other types of research in ways that are ultimately debilitating to the field. 57 And indeed, because the physiological processes of the human body have been so successfully analyzed using standard scientific hypothesis-testing research methodologies, it is understandable that calls for "humanistic" approaches to the study of human health should be met with skepticism. But it is precisely because of the unflinching institutional commitment to the positivist perspective in health research that I feel it necessary to present the shortcomings and pitfalls of the positivist methodology as starkly as possible.

Under these protocols, the procedures used to test hypotheses about behavioral influences are identical to those used to test hypotheses about physiological processes. Support from the NIH culminates in Randomized Control Trials, whether for trials of new medications for treating AIDS or for testing schoolbased drug abuse prevention curricula. Experimental research is the ideal against which all other research is measured. Decisions about which research receives funding are based largely on the degree to which researchers can approximate ideal experimental conditions or show that the proposed research is an essential preliminary step in the sequence of stages leading toward fully experimental tests of hypotheses.
