Like many of the early towns in Australia, Riverstone has a number of small churches of varying denominations, set within a small town boundary, and several of the local private schools reflect these religious affiliations. As with the local state-run schools, they provide an all-round education, but with a focus on the values and teachings associated with their particular faith. Luke’s parents had forked out to send him to one of these private schools, Norwest Christian College, where he received much of his formal education, and it was here he later met his fellow 5 Seconds of Summer band mates, Michael Clifford and Calum Hood.

As Michael began to see more of Luke’s performances and witnessed a few of his shows in the school grounds, he realized they shared more than just an interest in playing guitar; they also had similar tastes in music. The pair drifted towards each other, and very quickly they were swapping guitar-playing tips and discussing their favourite artists until the idea of starting a band themselves began to surface. ”’ And, that easily, the pieces fell into place – ‘banding’ had become ‘band’. Soon Norwest College’s music room became a regular hangout for Luke and Michael as they started jamming together, learning new songs and generally exploring their shared passion for music.

Of all the boys, Michael seems to have the greatest desire to see the band move towards a more ‘serious’ rock sound as their careers progress. This obviously stems from his own personal tastes, but it is also reflected in the creative input he’s already had in the songs the boys have recorded over the last couple of years. Michael has co-written seven tracks featured across the different standard versions of their debut album, and his influence has clearly signalled a move away from the softer, more poppy sound of their very first songs to the much darker and more guitar-driven tones of ‘Good Girls’, ‘18’ and ‘End Up Here’.
